Margin protection and catalogue profitability in Q4

Budget follows the products that make money, not the whole catalogue — revenue and profit tiers in Google Ads, selective premium sets in Meta Ads.

Margin protection and catalogue profitability

Google Ads

Revenue / profit structure instead of the full catalogue

What we do

We split products into high / mid / low / no-revenue tiers or profit segments and vary exposure and budget accordingly.

Segments use the last 30–90 days, combining store, GA4 and ad-cost data:

  • high: top revenue, profit or ROAS
  • mid: stable products outside the very top
  • low: weaker efficiency but still selling
  • no revenue / low profit: no sales or no return
  • for profit segments: COGS / margin data or a reliable proxy
  • consistent product mapping and no major price errors in the feed

Why

Q4 discounts cut margin just as traffic gets pricier. ROAS alone won't show whether a campaign sells at a loss.

Meta Ads

Meta as a selective channel: premium / gift / high-value

What we do

Instead of the broad catalogue we carve out premium, bundle, gift and high-margin packs.

Packs include products that:

  • belong to premium brands or gift categories
  • have good margin or high basket value
  • look good in catalogue creatives
  • are available in the approved volume
  • make sense as a standalone offer

Why

On a limited budget Meta should show products that tell the offer best and defend margin, not copy the Google catalogue.

  • premium_push
  • gift_set
  • high_margin_meta
FAQ

Common questions

How do I protect margin in Google Ads campaigns during Black Friday?

Split the catalogue into revenue or profit segments and allocate budget by them instead of promoting everything equally. Data Octopus calculates segments from store, GA4, ad-cost and COGS data and sends them to the feed as a custom label.

Do profit segments require COGS data?

Ideally yes, but a reliable margin proxy works too. Data Octopus accepts costs from a file or an ERP and matches them to feed products.

Why not send the whole catalogue to Meta Ads in Q4?

With rising reach costs, it's better to focus Meta on premium, gift and high-margin products. They look best in creatives and hold results despite discounts.

What period should revenue segments use before Q4?

Usually the last 30–90 days. A shorter window reacts faster; a longer one stabilises segments for lower-volume products.
