What is Meta Ads?

Meta Ads is Meta's advertising platform that serves ads across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Audience Network. For e-commerce, the key element is the product catalog in Commerce Manager, which powers Advantage+ catalog ads (formerly dynamic ads), Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns, collections, and dynamic remarketing.

Why the feed

Why does Meta Ads need a good product feed?

On Meta Ads, users do not search for products—they browse content. A catalog ad must capture attention with a specific product, image, and price, while the algorithm determines whom to show it to. Feed quality determines:

which products are eligible for ads and which product sets they belong to,

whether the creative displays current pricing, promotions, and availability,

whether dynamic remarketing avoids promoting out-of-stock or unprofitable products,

whether the Advantage+ algorithm optimizes toward products that actually generate profit.

Without catalog segmentation, a campaign distributes its budget across the entire inventory, and Meta typically favors cheap, easy-to-sell products that are not necessarily the most profitable.

Advantage

How is the Data Octopus product feed better than a standard one?

Standard feed

A standard feed from an e-commerce platform describes the product, but reveals nothing about its performance. Data Octopus combines feed data, GA4, Meta Ads, Google Ads, e-commerce platform data, along with margin and cost-of-goods-sold data into a single model at the product and variant level. Meta Ads is a two-way integration: Data Octopus retrieves product performance from Meta and feeds an enriched catalog back into the platform. Based on this:

Data Octopus feed

  • custom labels in the catalog are populated with daily recalculated segments: revenue, ROAS, margin, profit after ad spend, trends, seasonality, product age, and returns,
  • it is easy to identify products that sell well on Google but lack impressions on Meta, and vice versa,
  • out-of-stock, unprofitable, or low-stock products can be automatically excluded,
  • titles and descriptions are generated using attribute-based rules across the entire catalog.
Possibilities

What does the Data Octopus product feed make possible in Meta Ads?

Profitability-based product sets: bestsellers, high-margin products, new arrivals, seasonal items, and products with zero exposure.

Dedicated Advantage+ campaigns for segments with different potential, each with tailored budgets and targets.

Dynamic remarketing limited strictly to profitable, in-stock products.

Leveraging Google Ads data to guide Meta decisions: promoting products on Meta that have proven successful in other channels.

Automatic reassignment of products between sets as their performance metrics change.

As a result, your Meta Ads budget is allocated to products with the highest profit potential, rather than simply those the algorithm finds easiest to sell.

How to analyse product performance across sales channels

  1. 01

    Why does it matter?

A full picture of marketing results is key to judging what works and finding areas to strengthen.

Without a single source of truth each platform reports its own result and real product performance stays hidden.

  2. 02

How to check if the problem exists?

If you look at product data from your feed, GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads and your store separately, in different dashboards, the problem exists.

Also compare revenue and orders in GA4 with your store engine. A gap above 15% means segmentation should rely on store data.

  3. 03

How to use the feed in your ad account?

Data Octopus joins all sources on a common key — the product or variant ID. In the product performance view you analyse impressions, clicks, cost, revenue and ROAS from several channels at once, by product, brand or category.

Insights flow back into the feed as labels — e.g. products strong in one channel and weak in another — and steer campaigns right away.

  4. 04

    How to measure results?

The result: visible gaps between ad-platform metrics and between GA4 and your store — and budget decisions based on one consistent data source.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What fields must a Meta Ads product file include?

A Meta Ads product file needs at least an ID, title, description, product link, image link, price and availability. Brand, GTIN/EAN, category, sale price and variants are also recommended. Data Octopus maps these fields automatically to the Meta Ads specification and adds extra fields with segmentation.

Which format should a Meta Ads feed use: XML, CSV or Google Sheets?

The most reliable option is an XML or CSV file at a fixed URL that Meta Ads fetches automatically. Data Octopus generates the feed in the format Meta Ads requires, so there are no manual store exports or spreadsheets to maintain.

How do I optimise a Meta Ads product feed to improve campaign results?

The biggest gain comes from combining product data with sales and margin data. In practice: rule-based titles and descriptions, correct GTINs and categories, up-to-date prices and stock, and profitability segments in extra fields. That way the Meta Ads budget goes to products that make money.

How do I use custom labels (custom_label) in a Meta Ads feed?

Custom labels split your catalogue into groups that can get their own campaigns, budgets and goals. Data Octopus fills them daily with segments such as bestseller, high margin, new, declining or no impressions, so products move between groups in Meta Ads on their own.

Why are products rejected in Meta Ads and how do I fix it?

The most common causes are outdated price or availability, missing GTIN, a broken image or a title that is too long or incomplete. Data Octopus validates the feed before sending it to Meta Ads, fills missing fields with rules and refreshes prices and stock several times a day.

How often should a Meta Ads product feed be updated?

As often as prices and stock change in your store, which in practice means several times a day. Data Octopus updates the Meta Ads feed automatically, together with segments based on the latest sales data.

How do I prepare a Meta Ads feed for several countries and currencies?

Each market needs its own feed with the right language, currency and prices. Data Octopus builds Meta Ads feeds for many markets from one data model, with separate segmentation for each country.
