What is Google Merchant Center (GMC)?

Google Merchant Center (GMC) is a Google platform where an online store stores its product catalog data. Based on the product feed submitted to Merchant Center, Google displays products across Google Ads campaigns (Performance Max, Shopping, Demand Gen), Google Shopping, free product listings, and YouTube. Merchant Center serves as the entry point for any online store into Google Shopping ads.

Why the feed

Why does Google Merchant Center (GMC) need a good product feed?

There are no keywords in Google Shopping ads. Search query matching, ad copy, and campaign structure rely entirely on feed data: title, description, category, price, availability, GTIN, and custom labels. Feed quality determines:

which search queries can trigger a product impression,

whether a product passes review without being disapproved,

how precisely the catalog can be segmented into campaigns and product groups,

whether Performance Max allocates budget to products that actually generate profit.

Outdated prices or stock levels lead to product disapprovals or paid clicks with zero chance of a sale.

Advantage

How is the Data Octopus product feed better than a standard one?

Standard feed

A standard e-commerce platform feed only contains basic catalog data: title, price, availability, and category. It lacks information on how well a product sells and how much profit it generates.

Data Octopus feed

Data Octopus unifies data from the product feed, GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads, the e-commerce platform, as well as margin and cost of goods sold (COGS) data into a single model at the product and variant level. Based on this:

  • custom labels (custom_label_0–4) are populated with daily-recalculated segments: revenue, ROAS, margin, profit after ad spend, trend, seasonality, product age, and returns,
  • titles and descriptions are generated through rule-based logic using product attributes across the entire catalog, without manual editing,
  • unprofitable, out-of-stock, or low-inventory products can be automatically excluded from ad delivery,
  • the feed updates multiple times a day, ensuring prices, stock levels, and segments always reflect the store's current status.
Possibilities

What does the Data Octopus product feed make possible in Google Merchant Center (GMC)?

Segmenting Performance Max and Shopping campaigns by profitability rather than category: dedicated campaigns for bestsellers, high-margin products, new arrivals, and zero-impression products.

Setting differentiated target ROAS for product segments with varying profit margins.

Automatically moving products between campaigns as their performance changes, eliminating manual spreadsheet analysis.

Securing visibility for new arrivals and low-impression products that Google's algorithm typically overlooks.

Responding quickly to seasonality and promotions, as feed segments and pricing refresh alongside incoming performance data.

Cutting ad spend on products that generate costs without revenue or sell below the break-even point.

As a result, your Google Ads budget is concentrated on the most profitable parts of your inventory, allowing your team to focus on campaign strategy instead of manual feed management.

Framework #5

How to find and manage products that generate cost but no revenue

  1. 01

    Why does it matter?

Products that only generate cost in an ad platform lower return on investment and profitability, and raise storage costs.

One of the main goals of PPC is to reduce their number — by activating them or managing them in a controlled way to stop wasting budget.

  2. 02

How to check if the problem exists?

Data Octopus shows daily how many products generated cost but no revenue in the last 30 days.

You can also check it in Google Ads: Products tab, filters conversion value < 1 and cost > 0.

  3. 03

How to use the feed in your ad account?

These products get a feed label such as “NoPurchaseCost”. Move them to a separate PMAX or Shopping campaign with a moderate budget and remove them from other campaigns.

Start with a loose bid strategy — maximise conversions or conversion value, no tROAS — to increase visibility. Products that start selling return to standard campaigns on their own, and new budget drainers join automatically. Consider pausing those that still don't sell after a few weeks despite good price and stock.

  4. 04

    How to measure results?

Measure growth in revenue, units sold and ROAS for products in the label, and a falling number of products in it. Review weekly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What fields must a Google Ads product file include?

A Google Ads product file needs at least an ID, title, description, product link, image link, price and availability. Brand, GTIN/EAN, category, sale price and variants are also recommended. Data Octopus maps these fields automatically to the Google Ads specification and adds extra fields with segmentation.

Which format should a Google Ads feed use: XML, CSV or Google Sheets?

The most reliable option is an XML or CSV file at a fixed URL that Google Ads fetches automatically. Data Octopus generates the feed in the format Google Ads requires, so there are no manual store exports or spreadsheets to maintain.

How do I optimise a Google Ads product feed to improve campaign results?

The biggest gain comes from combining product data with sales and margin data. In practice: rule-based titles and descriptions, correct GTINs and categories, up-to-date prices and stock, and profitability segments in extra fields. That way the Google Ads budget goes to products that make money.

How do I use custom labels (custom_label) in a Google Ads feed?

Custom labels split your catalogue into groups that can get their own campaigns, budgets and goals. Data Octopus fills them daily with segments such as bestseller, high margin, new, declining or no impressions, so products move between groups in Google Ads on their own.

Why are products rejected in Google Ads and how do I fix it?

The most common causes are outdated price or availability, missing GTIN, a broken image or a title that is too long or incomplete. Data Octopus validates the feed before sending it to Google Ads, fills missing fields with rules and refreshes prices and stock several times a day.

How often should a Google Ads product feed be updated?

As often as prices and stock change in your store, which in practice means several times a day. Data Octopus updates the Google Ads feed automatically, together with segments based on the latest sales data.

How do I prepare a Google Ads feed for several countries and currencies?

Each market needs its own feed with the right language, currency and prices. Data Octopus builds Google Ads feeds for many markets from one data model, with separate segmentation for each country.
